//V=.
' GEOMATRIX
the SJCPHS. After well development and purging had been completed, groundwater samples
were collected from each well and submitted to Friedman and Bruya, Inc. (Friedman and
Bruya), of Seattle, Washington, under Geomatrix chain-of-custody procedures for analysis for
rTPHg (C6 to C12 carbon range)using EPA Method 8015; TPHd (C10 to C24 carbon range) using
EPA Method 8015 Modified;benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) using EPA
' Method 8021B; and PAHs using EPA Method 8270 SIM. Sample extracts for TPHd analyses
' were cleaned up with silica gel by EPA Method 3630 prior to analyses to remove polar
biogenic materials. A second round of groundwater sampling was performed on 16 October
' 1998. Due to a petroleum sheen observed on groundwater in TW-2, no sample was collected
from this well on this date. A groundwater sample was collected from TW-1 and analyzed for
the same constituents.
4.0 RESULTS
No TPHg, TPHd,BTEX, or PA-Hs were detected in groundwater samples collected from
temporary well TW-I on either of the dates sampled. In the sample that was affected by a
' sheen collected from TW-2, TPHg, TPHd, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were detected at
concentrations of 1200, 520, 1.7, and 4.1 µg/1,respectively. In addition, the method blank
' contained 130 µg/1 of TPHd as a result of laboratory contamination; therefore, this sample may
be positively biased. Acenaphthene, fluorene, and phenanthrene were also detected in this
sample at concentrations of 0.9, 2.2, and 1.4 µg/1, respectively. Groundwater analytical results
are presented in Table 1. Analytical laboratory reports and chain-of-custody records are
presented in Appendix C.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS
' Groundwater data indicate that the residual petroleum present in the soil at the Surland Property
is not providing a significant source of dissolved petroleum constituents to groundwater.
' Groundwater samples collected from the locations in the assumed downgradient direction from
affected soil (TW-1, GB-4, and GB-5) did not contain dissolved petroleum at concentrations
' above WQOs. Based on our review of the chromatograms, "detections" of constituents in the
\\sf3\deprdara\Do Sate\4780.01\clsrrpt.doc 4
