1 6
5.0 EXCAVATION AND SOIL SAMPLING BENEATH FUEL DISPENSERS
' FREY prepared a workplan for limited soil excavation based on the laboratory results for soil
samples D5,D8 and D9. The workplan was dated November 13,2003 and was verbally approved
by the Margaret Lagorio of the San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health on
November 14, 2003.
5.1 Soil Sample Collection
On November 14, 2003, FREY returned to the Site to excavate soils in the area of previously
collected soil samples D5, D8 and D9. Harlan Knoll of the San Joaquin County Department of
' Environmental Health witnessed the soil sampling on November 14, 2003. FREY observed a
significant amount of product piping had been installed as well as forms for future fuel dispensers
which prohibited the excavation of a large volume of soils.
' A backhoe was used to excavate a limited amount of soil from the vicinity of previously collected
soil samples D5, D8 and D9. An area approximately 6 feet(north to south)by 8 feet(east to west)
and 7 feet deep was excavated in the location of previously collected soil sample D5. Soil sample
D5-2 was collected from the bottom of the excavation with assistance of a backhoe.
' An area approximately 6 feet(north to south)by 3 feet(east to west)and 7 feet deep was excavated
in the area of previously collected soil sample D8. Soil sample D8-2 was collected from a depth of
approximately 7 feet bgs from the bottom of the excavation with assistance of a backhoe.
An area approximately 6 feet(north to south)by 3 feet(east to west)and 5 feet deep was excavated
in the area of previously collected soil sample D9. Soil sample D9-2 was collected from a depth of
approximately 5.5 feet bgs from the bottom of the excavation with assistance of a backhoe.
Soil samples D5-2,D8-2 and D9-2 were collected by inserting a brass tube directly into the center
of the backhoe bucket. Excavated soils consisted of yellowish brown, damp, hard, silty clay. Each
sample was labeled with the project number, sample number, depth, time and date of sample
' collection. After sample collection, the brass tubes were capped with teflon tape and an air tight
plastic cap, placed in plastic bags, and stored in an ice chest cooled with ice. The soil samples and
the associated chain of custody were transported to the laboratory at the conclusion of soil sampling
1 activities.
5.2 Laboratory Analyses
' Soil samples D5-2,D8-2 and D9-2 were analyzed for TPH-g and TPH-d in general accordance with
EPA Method 8015M. In addition, the soil samples D5-2, D8-2 and D9-2 were also analyzed for
' BTEX and fuel oxygenates in general accordance with EPA Method 8260B.
' FREY
