(GZA) on your behalf for the above-referenced
site. Noting the favorable increased concentrations of dissolved oxygen in observation wells
OW-1 and OW-2, GZA proposes to install three additional air-sparge wells to address the core
of the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination plume in the area of former underground storage
tanks 1 and 2 and monitoring well MW-2.
In the work plan, GZA proposes to:
• Install air-sparge wells AS-4 through AS-6, screened between approximately twenty and
twenty-five feet below surface grade (bsg) at locations illustrated on Figure 2 of the work
plan;
• Continuously collect soil samples for lithologic evaluation and laboratory analysis during
advancement of the three air-sparge wells, beginning at depths below the excavation
backfill and continuing to total depth of approximately twenty-five feet bsg; and
• Analyze the soil samples for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g); and
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX).
The EHD approves the proposed work plan with the following conditions:
• Relocate proposed air-sparge well AS-5 outside the former tank pit area, adjacent to
George's Service building; based on the high concentrations of contaminants of concern
detected during the advancement of soil boring HB-4 and collection of the soil samples
labeled 'southeast and southwest sidewalls' during the soil excavation, significant
concentrations of petroleum contaminants are suspected to lie beneath the building.
The EHD believes targeting this area may reduce the adsorbed petroleum hydrocarbon
contaminants; and
