(GTI). It was reported in SVE Test that
observation wells either in the remedial excavation backfill (VEW-2) or in close proximity to the
backfill (MW-2 and MW-5) displayed a favorable response to a vacuum applied to extraction
well VEW-1, which is screened in the backfill. More distal wells (MW-1, MW-3, MW-4 and
MW-8) and deeper screened well (MW-2X) had no response to the applied vacuum during the
pilot test. Approximately 3.5 pounds of petroleum hydrocarbons were extracted each 8-hour day
during the pilot test, leading GTI to conclude that SVE could be successfully utilized at the site
to remediate impacted soil, and thereby reduce the impact on groundwater.
In SCM, GTI reported the results of an assessment investigation that collected soil and
groundwater samples from 15 direct-push soil borings to better characterize the distribution of
petroleum hydrocarbons in both media. GTI found that most impacted soil resided between 10
and 15 feet below surface grade (bsg), and with a few localized exceptions, was in the area of
the former underground storage tank (UST) over-excavation. Impacted groundwater was also
primarily onsite, within the vicinity of the former UST over-excavation. GTI recommended
implementing SVE to remediate the impacted media on site and to not implement any off-site
remediation.
The EHD concurs with the recommendations and suggests that one or two sparge wells be
installed in the former UST over-excavation backfill to accelerate remediation of groundwater.
Submit a remedial action plan (RAP) with an executive summary of the plan to the EHD by
01 August 2011 and the EHD will initiate a 30-day public participation period required for the
RAP approval.
/Questions or comments may be directed to Vicki McCartney at (209))4468-9852.
Victoria McCartney,McCarrtney, REHS Nuel C.
