SECOR INTERNATIONAL INCORPORATED
WWW secor corn
S E C 0 R
7) Provide an assessment of the site specific effectiveness of ozone spargmg for eliminating
' Identified soil and groundwater contamination in this case, and identdy/demonstrate that any
breakdown products of this process (i a acetone and/or other degradation products) are
analyzed for and addressed by the planned remediation
1 SECOR will analyze soil and groundwater in the study to determine how the treatment has
changed COC concentrations SECOR will also analyze for degradation byproducts
' including on acetone, tert buyl alcohol, and tert butyl formate All of these byproducts are
also the degradation byproducts of microbial actâ–ºvo in the sail, and therefore maybe
generated in equal or greater concentrations naturally but at a slower initial rate
' SECOR will address each concern either in the study or through the presentation of chemical
equations and rationale in the subsequent Bench Scale Study Report
' SCOPE OF WORK
' Soil and groundwater samples will be prepared for treatment by mixing the required mass of soil
and groundwater and adding the appropriate mass of MTBE gasoline to each sample The
samples will be homogenized to provide adequate mixing Soils and groundwater have been
sampled from the area of contamination, but will be spiked with MTBE gasoline to ensure that
adequate BTEX, TPH and MTBE mass is present to observe the desired reactions.
The treatment protocol is listed below
' Treatment
Soil and groundwater samples will be treated with 30 times the predicted stoichiometric dose of
ozone (samples will be analyzed after a set sparge time which is representative of the
appropriate ozone dosing)
Ozone will be generated and sparged using a Pacific Ozone model 21 ozone generator which
' has the capacity to generate 0 20 pounds per day of ozone using a breathing air feed (20%
oxygen)
' Sample Preparation
' Untreated and Control
- 200 g soil
= 400 ml groundwater
1000 ml Erlenmeyer Flask
- 400 NL of MTBE-gasoline sample (shaken vigorously into water and soil after addition)
- Sample will be allowed to equilibrate for 24 hours
- Control will be sparged with air at the equivalent flow rate and duration as the ozone
system,
- Untreated will be analyzed with the ozone and control samples without any treatment
1
3
