MW-2, MW-3 and MW-5 have the highest levels of alkalinity measured at the site.
Elevated levels of alkalinity are an indicator of benzene biodegradation, either aerobic
or anaerobic.
2. MW-2, MW-3, MW-5 and MW-7 have a depleted nitrate as nitrogen constituent
compared to the other water table wells, which is consistent with biodegradation in an
anaerobic enviromnent.
3. MW-2 shows dramatically depleted levels of sulfate. The absence of nitrate as nitrogen
in MW-2 may have caused a substitution of sulfate as the preferential biodegradation
electron acceptor.
i• 4. MW-2 shows a dramatically elevated level of iron suggesting the well is near the plume
core.
5. Redox potential has been consistently lowest in MW-2 suggesting MW-2 is near the
center of the plume (Table 4).
6. Dissolved oxygen measured at the site ranges from 0.02 to 1.63 ppm. The lowest
measured levels are in MW-2 and neighboring wells. This suggests that MW-2 is at the
core of the plume. It also suggests background dissolved oxygen levels are conducive
to aerobic biodegradation.
7. The groundwater temperature at the site ranges between 71° and 76°F.
8. The measured pH in the water table wells range between 7.0 and 8.0.
The test results showed the following trends when comparing the contaminated zone to
background conditions.
