c 4rp
Stockton Service Station January 8,1988
Equipment Company,Inc.
P.O.Box 504
Stockton,CA 94201
Attn: Mr.Mike Flores
Re: Soil Sampling Beneath Gasoline Storage Tank
Ruiz Grocery Store,Exceltech Project No.1619G ENVIRC?AE1TAL HEALTH
FErRMIT/SERVICES
Dear Mr. Flores:
3
At your request,on Monday,December 14,1987,Exceltech sent a crew to the Ruiz Grocery Store
at 4491 West Durham Ferry Road near Tracey,California to drill two exploratory borings and
collect soil samples from beneath an inplace subsurface gasoline storage tank. It was necessary to
drf[I the borings at an angle due to obstruction directly over the tank. The work was performed
under permit No.874192 issued by the San Joaquin Local Health District(SJLHD)and followed
our proposal of November 16, 1987 and addendum of November 20,1987. A representative of
k SJLHD,Dan Moe,was present at the site and observed a portion of the work.
One boring was drifted under each end of the tank. The borings were initiated approximately 10 `
' € feet from the center of the tank and drilled at a 45 degree angle so that the bottom of the boring
r' was directly under the tank at approximately 10 feet in depth. Samples were collected at 5-foot
Intervals along the borehole using a California-type sampler equipped with brass liners. One
liner from each sampli.ig Interval was saved for analysis. The ends of the liner were sealed with
foil and plastic caps,me ged on a chain-of-custody sheet, and placed In a chilled cooler for
transport to a state-certified!aboratory for analysis. A boring log was prepared for each
borehole.
i
Boring S13-1 was initiated at the end of the tank near the pump and boring SE-2 was initiated at
the opposite end of the tank. The two lowermost samples from each borehole were analyzed for
total hydrocarbons as gasoline with a distinction of the compounds benzene, toulene, ethy[benzene,
., and total xylenes. These samples were eollei led from approximately 8 feet below the surface(the
level of the tank bottom)and from 10 feet bea.v the surface(directly below the tank).
Analysis shows that hydrocarbon contamir;ation was detected In samples Sao-3,SBZ-'2,and
S82-3. The results of the analyses aiw..attached as well as copies of the boring logs,SJLHD
permit,chain-of-custody,and site sketch showing the baring locations
If you have any questions,pleas-call.
Sincerely,--
EXCELTECH,INC.
Stephen Costello Christopher M.Palmer,C.E.G.1262
Staff Geologist Manager,Geotechnical Services
cc:Dan Moe(SJLHD)
41674 CHRISTY STREET • FREMONT,CA 94538
PHONE(415)659.0404 • CONTR.
