Herman&Helen 5 Marina..t Quarter 1998 Groundwater Monnormp
April 16, 1998
PagL 3
3 FIRST QUARTER, 1998, GROUNDWATER MONITORING
31 FIELD METHODOLOGY
On March 27, 1998, Condor personnel were on site to conduct quarterly groundwater monitoring The monitoring
included measurement of water levels in the site monitor wells and at the surface water measurement stations and
the collection of groundwater samples from the monitor wells All field equipment was decontaminated in the
field with a solution of laboratory-grade, non-phosphate detergent and hydrocarbon-free water and rinsed with
hydrocarbon-free water prior to use in each well All field instruments were calibrated to the manufacturer's
recommended standards The water level in each well was measured to the nearest 0 01 foot with a standard
battery-operated, flat-tape, water-level meter A new, disposable, polyethylene barter was lowered into each well
to collect a field-inspection sample The bailer sample was inspected for floating product, sheen, discoloration
and/or odor Floating product was not observed in any of the monitor wells during the groundwater sampling No
petroleum hydrocarbon odor was noted in any of the monitor wells
EThe purging and sampling order for the monitor wells was MW-1, MW-3, MW-2, and MW-4 The wells were
purged with a Grundfos Readiflo II submersible pump For the purpose of evaluating intrinsic bioremediation,
various parameters were monitored during the purgmg of each well, including dissolved oxygen, reduction-
oxidation potential, pll, electrical conductivity, and temperature The purge water was discharged to 55-gallon
drums and left on site to await disposal Groundwater Monitoring I,reld I-orms are included to Appendix C
Groundwater samples were collected by filling sample containers directly from the pump discharge tubing The
groundwater was transferred to three 40-m1 glass VOA vials fitted with Teflon-Itned caps (for petroleum
hydrocarbon analysis) and to a one-liter polyethylene bottle (for laboratory tested intrinsic bioremediation
parameters - alkalinity, nitrate, sulfate, and ferrous iron) The vials were checked to assure that no air bubbles
were present Each sample container was labeled and placed in a cooler chilled with ice and delivered under
chain-of-custody procedures to GeoAnalytical Laboratories, Inc , in Modesto, California, within 24 hours of
sample collection
For quality control, one rinsate sample was collected and labeled 1432-MW5-3127198 The ansate sample was
collected by pouring hydrocarbon-free water through the Grundfos Readiflo II submersible pump into the
sampling containers after the pump was decontaminated Prior to collection of the rinsate sample, the pump was
LW CONDOR
