PHS/EHD has the <br /> following comments for your consideration. <br /> Groundwater samples were collected on May 16, 1996 and the results reported in <br /> the second quarter monitoring report. Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) was <br /> detected at concentrations less than 2.5 ppb to 18 ppb. PHS/EHD suggests that <br /> the detection of MTBE be confirmed utilizing EPA Method 8260. Petroleum <br /> hydrocarbon contamination was not detected in the groundwater samples <br /> collected. Based on the depth to groundwater measured in May (approximately 24 <br /> feet below grade) the static level of groundwater is above the screened interval of <br /> the monitoring wells. The next groundwater sampling event, third quarter, should <br /> include the vapor extraction wells, since they are generally screened from 5 to 30 <br /> feet below grade, while the monitoring wells are screened from 30 to 50 feet <br /> below grade. <br /> Soil samples were collected on April 2 and 3, 1996 to confirm the effectiveness of <br /> soil vapor extraction and to characterize residual soil contamination, if any. The <br /> resultant soil cuttings were disposed at Forward, Inc. in Manteca. Petroleum <br /> hydrocarbon contamination was detected between approximately 20 and 30 feet <br /> below grade in the area of the former tanks. <br /> PHS/EHD concurs with the recommendation to shut down the soil vapor extraction <br /> system. However, PHS/EHD recommends that you not dismantle the system until <br /> the potential threat that the residual soil contamination poses to groundwater <br /> quality has been evaluated. <br /> Please submit a closure summary report including information which is <br /> A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services <br />
