Fifteen
soil-gas
samples sere: extracted and anal},zed at the site on May 30, 1990, .The precision tank;test
was performed following the standard tank testis
instead of the .v=e oil. g procedures and die::el gasoline was used ;E
p Asoil-gas survey war conducted to qualitatively asseg the potential prtts =of petroleum
hydrocarbons and their constituents on soil in the area of the former fuel storage tanks.
Sail-gas seat?Ies were analyzed for purgeabla petroleum hydrocarbons, and benzene,
toluene, ethy, benzene and xylene by gas chromatography. Concentra dons up to 25,000
ugg/l of air of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents were detected in soil-gas from the area
where the former tanks had been excavated. Levels of petroleurd hydrot:arbons up to 8400
ug/1 of air were detected in soil-gas samples up to 60 feet west and zo tdat southeast of the
tank excavation. An elevated concentration of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents of 790
ug/l of air was also detected adjacent to the underground piptno which leads from the tank
'area to the eastern pump island. An addendum containing additional QA/QC information
for the soil-;as survey will be following this report.
On June 1, 1990 the 500-gallon waste oil tank was precision tested for tank integrity. The
tank was found to be Ieaking. It is unknown how long the tank has been, beaking or what
volume of waste oil has leaked from the tank to the surrounding soil.
Meirfelder feels that t he vertical and lateral extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon impact
from the former fuel storage tanks on the soil-gas has been qualitatively assessed, however
chemical analysis of soil samples from the site is necessary to assess actual concentrations
iof petroleum hydrocarbons and its constituents in.sail. It is probable that San Joaquin
County Public Ijealth Service will also request soil sampling to provide quantitative
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil. I a Regional Water Quality
Control Board may request that a ground water assessment be conducted at the site
because the ground water is approximately 14 to 16 fact below surface and may be affected
by petroleum hydrocarbons,--- ---- -------- -- ----
Kleinfelder rcr-ommai ds O.at petroleum hydrocarbon impact on soil be assessed and that a
feasibility study for the re;ued, ation of the soil be conducted for the site,
j
KLEiNFELDER 9795 Byt Rm Park Dilve, IMMMerurt G 956:7 t91G?3Wi•101.
*
