There are 2 types of sites that we are interested in knowing
about:
Sites Needing Evaluation
These are sites where significant soil and/or groundwater contamination is suspected but
an investigation has not been completed. They should be medium or large sites, not small
sites with small spills such as waste oil dumped in a small area only penetrating a few
inches down. Hopefully, there is at least some sampling data. It may be from an
inspection, complaint, known release. 'These are also sites where an owner/operator may
have had a consultant do some testing that shows there is a problem. These sites, if
selected, would receive a site screening to find out what information is available and
determine what needs to be done. DTSC receives grant money from USEPA to conduct these
evaluations.
Abandoned or "Orphan" Sites
These are sites that are typically known to have had releases and have significant
contamination problems and there is no known or viable party able or willing to
investigate and clean them up. These could be plating shops, circuit board manufacturers,
forges, mills, or any kind of manufacturing operation, especially those who used solvents
for parts degreasing or in processing. Dry cleaners in older parts of towns/cities that
have operated for a long period of time and are known to have cleaned on site would also
1
