• All participants will remain in their cars.
• Unloading personnel will transport and place waste materials in their designated areas.
• If an accident or spill occurs, personnel will follow all specified safety instructions.
7.2 REUSE AREA
All collected items are evaluated for placement in the reuse area. Conditions that are evaluated include
type and amount of material. The containers must be in good condition and having all original marking
and labels intact. See section 8.4 (ReUse Guidelines) for further details about the ReUse Program.
7.3 BULKING AREAS
All paint, oil, coolant, and flammable liquids are gathered, segregated, consolidated with like
materials, and removed from the site in various fashions. Each material has a specific staging area
within the site, and segregation of waste materials must be maintained from the outset. The supervisor
establishes where material should be placed within each area so that segregation can be facilitated.
7.4 CHEMICAL AREA
The chemical area is a RESTRICTED ZONE open only to those conducting categorization,
segregation, and packing of flammable, corrosive, poisonous and otherwise unknown materials. This
zone also contains the hazardous categorization(HAZCAT) area where unknown materials are tested
to determine their proper classification. No smoking, eating or drinking is allowed within this "hot
zone," and all occupants in the zone must be properly attired at all times. This area is further
subdivided into various DOT classifications in which the materials are packed and shipped accordingly
(flammable, corrosive, poison, etc.).
7.5 IDENTIFYING UNKNOWN WASTE
Stericycle attempts to identify all waste material on-site, and discourages unnecessary
analysis and testing. All unknowns received are reviewed by the PM or OC to ensure that
visual standard hazardous waste characterization test methods may be implemented and to
minimize further unnecessary handling. Once hazardous waste characterization test methods
have been determined to be required, Stericycle utilizes streamlined and scaled-down
approaches to rapidly identify chemical characteristics to meet the profiling needs of the
treatment facility.
HazCat analysis will be conducted concurrently with the inventory identification and
classification confirmation procedures. Standard hazardous waste characterization tests are
pH, water reactivity, oxidizing potential. Stericycle personnel have extensive training and
experience performing HazCat analyses in the field and have developed these streamlined
field test methods.
The standard procedure for screening unknown materials of less than five gallons follows the
accepted protocol:
