8.6 SEGREGATION
Primary segregation involves delivering specific materials to their proper areas (paints, chemicals,
oils, etc.) after being unloaded. All chemicals to be identified and/or lab-packed will be deposited on
the lab-pack table where the "hot zone" crew will classify and pack the materials according to proper
DOT segregation and packaging regulations. The On-Site PM or OC will assist in secondary
segregation to ensure that only materials that should be in a specific category actually enter that flow
stream. The PM is ultimately responsible for supervising quality assurance of reusable materials and
supervising the lab packing of all materials after segregation. (See section 8.8 for further details)
8.7 BULKING PROCEDURES
Stericycle bulks as much material as possible on-site in order to cut down on the number of drums
produced, reducing waste, transportation and disposal costs. The following wastes may be bulked at
the HHW Facility:
• Latex Paint
• Antifreeze
• Motor Oil
• Oil-Base Paint
• Pourable Flammable Liquids
All bulking operations occur in an area located away from the waste receiving area which is
demarcated and has no public access. No smoking, flames,or ignition sources of any sort are allowed
in the receiving, storage or bulking areas. The following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must
be worn for all bulking operations:
• Tyvek Coveralls
• Eye Protection
• Face Shield
• Nitrile Gloves (inner and outer chemical resistant)
• Steel Toe Boots
• Apron(splash protection)
Bulked latex paint will be poured into 55-gallon drums and the can scraped clean of all residue. The
empty cans will then be recycled whenever possible or discarded as municipal garbage. Antifreeze
containers will be emptied into the 500-gallon antifreeze tank until no further pourable liquid remains.
Motor oil will be bulked into a 1,000-gallon used oil tank, which is tested for chlorination and emptied
as needed. These three waste streams are recycled, therefore it is vital that they contain low levels of
contaminants.
The use of a Full Face Air Purifying Respirator in addition to the above listed minimum bulking PPE
is Mandatory while bulking Flammable Liquids.
Oil base paint and pourable flammable liquids will be bulked in the designated bulking room, as
specified by the facility Permit by Rule. Oil-base paint and pourable flammable liquids will be bulked
into 55-gallon drums and the cans scraped clean of all residue. The cans will then be recycled
Page 18 of 41
