CALIFORN[A REQUIREMENTS FOR WASTE AEROSOL CANS
Sunbelt California Policy: For safety and regulatory purposes do NOT puncture waste aerosol cans,
whether they are spent(empty)or non-spent(not empty). Aerosol cans are NOT to be discarded in
the trash and should be but treated as universal hazardous waste.
Contact your hazardous waste management vendor for additional guidance and an approved
container and labels so that all waste aerosol cans may be properly stored,accumulated and disposed
of as universal hazardous waste as required by state regulations,
Non-empty aerosol cans are disposed of for numerous reasons,such as:the spray mechanism is
damaged or clogged and no longer works,the propellant has been exhausted,or the owner decides
that he or she no longer wants or needs the product. When accumulating empty and non-empty
waste aerosol cans,you must:
■ Accumulate the waste aerosol cans in containers that are structurally sound, and compatible
with the contents of the can, and show no evidence of leaks,spills,or damage that could cause
leaks. The same management standards used for hazardous waste containers apply;
• Label containers of waste aerosol cans with one of the following phrases: "Universal Waste-
Aerosol Cans," "Waste Aerosol Cans," or"Used Aerosol Cans;"And
■ louring accumulation,sort cans by type and compatibility of contents.
■ Indicate the date the container first received waste aerosol cans on the label;
• Accumulate waste aerosol cans for no longer than one year;
■ Cover containers used to accumulate aerosol cans at the end of each workday;
+ Keep containers closed that are used to accumulate aerosol cans except when waste is being
added or removed;
+ Place accumulation containers in a location with sufficient ventilation to prevent formation of an
explosive atmosphere;
+ Place containers of accumulated waste aerosol cans on a surface that is free of cracks and gaps,
and is sufficiently impervious and bermed to contain leaks. Impervious means that the liquid
will not soak through the surface. Bermed means that a berm completely surrounds the area
where a leak ran take place. The statute does not address the volume that must be contained,
but is best interpreted as having the capacity to hold the contents of the largest container;
■ Place aerosol cans in containers that are designed, built, and maintained to withstand pressures
reasonably expected during storage and transportation;
■ keep containers of flammable wastes a safe distance from heat and open flames;
THINGS TO CONSIDER
■ Waste aerosol cans may accumulate for up to one year at each Profit Center.
• Do not store cans stored next to a hot furnace.
■ Do not store cans near acids where the cans would corrode.
• Do not store cans where they are likely to suffer mechanical damage.
September 2018
