SUNBELT
RENTALS
SAFETY TRAINING TOPIC: Offsite Spill Response
Despite our best efforts, unintentional offsite chemical spills do occur. The most common offsite spills are due
to broken hydraulic lines. Less commonly, spills may involve diesel fuel, battery acid or motor oil. Specific
clean up actions vary depending on the material spilled; however, the general process is always the same.
When a spill does occur, safe, responsible and immediate response is required. Implement the
S.W.I.M.S. procedure (outlined below) immediately upon discovery of a spill:
• Stop the leak: If you can do it safely, shut a valve,
upright an overturned container, etc.
S1 u • Warn others: Make sure other people in the area
know what has happened, then call the on-site spill
response coordinator and/or supervisor as well as
first responders, if necessary.
Vl • Isolate the area: Rope off the spill site, divert flow
from catch basin or drain using available spill
response equipment.
• Minimize: Limit your exposure with Personal
Protective Equipment and general safe work safety
practices.
■ Stand by: Remain on site to assist spill responders.
For small spills, you may be able to effectively
I mitigate without assistance using available spill
slullo ) response equipment. For larger spills outside
assistance is usually warranted.
Remember to notify your PCM. The PCM will notify the Regional Safety Manager, and an incident report
must be submitted for all spills. The PCM will also contact the customer and property owner if they were
not previously notified at the site. Also, remember that immediate, safe action is required — do not wait until
tomorrow to deal with the spill. Wasted time results in unnecessary damage, increased environmental and
health exposures and increased response costs. ABOVE ALL, REPSOND TO ALL SPILLS IN A SAFE AND
RESPONSIBLE MANNER?
!o REVE.uE 15 WORTH AN INJURY To ACHIEVE IT'.
Prepared October 2010;updated August 2013
