-WEGE-
but gasoline for toxic. And finally Article 11, Criteria for
Identification of Hazardous and Extremely Hazardous, Sections
' 66696-Toxicity Criteria, 66699-Total Threshold Limit
Concentrations (TTLC) and 66702-Ignitability.
SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Prior to sampling the SP-1 Moil, communications with Kr. Norman
Riley of the State of California Department of Health Services
Toxic Substance Control Division Alternate Technology suggested
that Pour representative samples should be obtained. This
frequency of sampling is based upon a waste unit ( a wante unit is
considered any separate unit be it 70 cu yards or 7000 au yards) .
Analysis of the soil should include the T2LC for the CAN metals,
weruatic toxicity test, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons and BTX6L,
using EPA raothod 5030, GCFID 8020. A Gastec LEL/02 mater was used
to screen the soil prior to obtaining the four representative soil
samples, inorder to identify if there was a danger of ignition or
explosion from the covered piles, the highest LEL found was 7%
which suggest that there is no risk from ignition or explosion.
Then samples were obtained for the chemical and toxic analysis
from the areas that exhibited the highest reading on the LEL meter
(SP1 -A-IA, SP1-A-1B, SP1-A-1C, and 8P1-A-1D) , see table 3 for
results and figura 3 for sample locations.
Duplicate samples were obtained and noted as A and B. The A /.
samples were preserved, chain of custody hand delivered to Eureka
Laboratories, Inc. of Sacramento, California for the 96 hour
Fathead minnow Fish Bioassy-Toxics and TTLC/CAM Metals EPA 6010
analysis. Eureka Laboratories is a State of California certified
lab (0108) . The B samples were preserved, chain of custody hand
delivered to ChemTech Analytical Laboratories of Rancho Cordova,
California for the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons and BTEX using EPA
method 8020 (GC-FID) and 5030 extraction. ChemTech Analytical
Laboratories is State of California certified lab (0359) , see
Table 3 for complete results.
TOXICITY AND IGNITABILITY CRITERIA
As stated earlier in PROCEDURES, Article 9, section 66680 states
that Benzene, Ethylbezene, Toluene and Xylenes need to be tested
,For toxic and ignitability and Gasoline only for ignitability.
The following information on each of the above compounds is
furnished in NIOSH POCKET GUIDE TO CHEMICAL HAZARDS. U.S. Dept. of
Health and Human Services and LANCE'S HANDBOOK OF CHEMISTRY.
COMPOUND EXPOSURE 1DLH* VAPOR LEL* FLASH
NAME LIMIT LEVEL PRESSURE % IN POINT
(PPM) (PPM) 0 68 F AIR F
Benzene 10 C 75amHg 1.3 12
Ethyl Ben,6ene 100 2000 7mmHg 1.0 59
Toluene 100 2000 22mmHv_ 1.3 40
3
