Sur+ace-6" : Sandv loam.
6"-rte '. . fairly clayey loam, +axrly dry , t irm, grading
to brownish-gray towards the east end of the pit.
6 -bottom: Sandy, clayey silts , buff to tan , with occassional pods
and irregular shaped inclusions of brownish clay.
No continous, uniform beds were noted , and the sediments were firm
and well compacted; there was no evidence of slumping or caving.
Refer to Plate XI for photos of the excavation.
The SJLHD representative, Mr . knoll , arrived at approximately
l : (_)(:)PM, and after some discussion , it was agreed to take a total of
7 samples-2 from the bottom, and S si dewal l s. Refer to Plates IX &
X for the appro,:i mate location of the samples.
A Thorpe Oil Co. employee was lowered to the bottom of the
excavation in the backhoe bucket. Using properly cleaned and sealed
brass tubes supplied by FGL. Environmental personel , he took two
samples at each of the locations indicated by Mr . FnolI & Mr.
Hunter . The samples were qui.ci, ly returned to the surface, properly
sealed , labeled , and refrigerated. They were transported to the
laboratory under- Chain--(:)+-Custody; (refer to E..hiblt H. ) A faint
gasolone odor was noted in some of the samples , but no free product
was observed.
Composite samples were also taken by FGL Environmental from the
spoil , to assist in evaluating remediation techniques if needed.
See Plate III for the results of that analysis. The e •cavation was
securely fenced and the spoil was covered with plastic.
RESULTS OF SAMPLE ANALYSIS
rhe results of the laboratory anlysis performed on the above samples
from the excavation are tabulated on Table II . The analysis
revealed that the .w. sidewall samples on the northeast , east , and
soLttheast side of till pit were clean. Very small amounts of BTX&E
were measured in the two bottom samples; TFH-G was detected in only
one sample, ( SW-^W. ) Neither Ethylene Dibromide nor organic lead
were detected at reporting limits in any of the samples.
However , samples No. SW-2W & SW-314, (refer to Plates IX X, )
indicate that contamination has not been removed in that area, and
will require further cleanup .
Although the composite samples of the spoil taken on 1/19/9(:) showed
detectable levels of DTX&E and TPH-G, EDB was below the reporting
limit of . 010 mg/[,q. The test for lead was not run. The composite
samples taken from the spoil at the conclusion of the excavation
4
