fte work may require personnel to enter confined spaces No Flour Daniel GTI employee or subcontractor shall enter an <br /> area identified as a confined space without using the CSE procedures described in this appendix and completing the <br /> site specific entry procedures presented in the CSE Permit, (Form D-4) The purpose of the CSE procedure is to protect <br /> employees from potentially hazardous environments and to facilitate immediate rescue in an emergency situation A CSE Permit <br /> must be posted at the entrance to each confined space <br /> CONFINED SPACES <br /> Definition <br /> A confined space has limited or restricted means of entry or exit, is large enough for an employee to <br /> enter and perform assigned work, and is not designed for continuous occupancy by the em to ee <br /> Examples <br /> These spaces may include, but are not limited to, underground vaults,tanks, storage bins, pits and <br />' diked areas, vessels, and silos <br /> Characteristics <br /> A permit-required confined space is one that meets the definition of a confined space and has one <br /> or more of these characteristics <br /> ■ Contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, <br /> ■ Contains a matenal that has the potential for engulfing an entrant, <br /> ■ Has an internal configuration that might cause an entrant to be trapped or asphyxiated by <br /> inwardly converging walls or by a floor that slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross <br /> section, and/or <br /> ■ Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazards <br /> Protocol for CSE <br />' ■ Personnel trained to conduct CSE procedures <br /> ■ Perform the appropriate air monitoring activity at various depths in the space prior to entry <br /> Monitor for (1) oxygen level, (2) flammable vapors, and (3) toxic vapors <br /> ■ Ventilate the atmosphere in the space so that entry may be made safely without respiratory <br /> protection If this is not feasible, appropriate respiratory protection must be worn by <br /> authorized entrants and attendants <br />' ■ Wear respiratory protection when ventilation alone can not achieve acceptable atmospheric <br /> levels of oxygen or flammable or toxic vapors <br /> ■ Have appropriate retrieval equipment worn b employees in the event of a mishap <br />' FLUOR DANIEL GTI 90 <br />
