Elevated concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g),methyl tert
butyl ether (NrME),and aromatic hydrocarbons have been detected during the last three quarters of
sampling since the installation of monitoring well 1`1\C'-1,h1 XL2,and MRX/-3 in Alarch 2004. The
highest concentration of contaminants were 110,000 micrograms per liter(ug/1) of ATIBE in N1\V-1
groundwater samples collected in June 2004,260,000 ug/I of TPH-g in August 2004,and 5,600 ug/l
of Benzene in August 2004. Another oxygenate, tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TANIE) has also been
detected in all three wells. The concentration of TAbIE has steadily increased in MAX'-1 during the
last 3 quarters. Analytical results of NRV-1 groundwater sample in August 2004 were 570 ug/l.
According to Guidelines for Investigation and Cleanup ofM7BE and Other Ether-Based Oxygenates published
by State Water Resources Control Board, the above-referenced site is a candidate for interim
remedial action for source area remediation within one year of discovery of the MTBE release.
EHD recommends timely implementation of interim remedial action using technologies such as soil
vapor extraction and air sparging on sites with oxygenates and aromatic hydrocarbons contamination
to reduce the rate of contaminants entering into a dissolved phase and migrating in groundwater, and
reduce the concentration of the dissolved contaminants in groundwater. Submit a work plan for
interim remedial action to EHD by April 30,2005.
Please feel free to contact Jeffrey Wong at(209)468-0335 if you have any questions.
Donna Heran,REHS,Director
Environmental Health Department
C.
