1
UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMOVAL
' Three USTs, associated piping and a dispenser Island were removed from the site on 06 October
1999 Seven samples were collected beneath the USTs, four samples were collected beneath the
dispenser area, two soil samples were collected from piping trenches and six discrete soil samples
' were collected from the excavated soil
Methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) and/or tertiary butanol (TBA) were detected in each of the soil
' samples collected from the stockpiled soil at the site Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as
gasoline(TPH-g)were detected at concentrations as high as 2,100 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg)
beneath the eastern end of the center UST location Volatile aromatics - benzene, toluene, ethyl
benzene and xylenes (BTEX)were detected at concentrations as high as 170 mg/kg from the same
sample location Table 1 presents analytical results of the UST removal samples
' Approximately 150 cubic yards of soil were excavated during removal of the USTs The excavated
soil was stockpiled on site
INTERIM SOIL EXCAVATION
IOn 12 May 2000, approximately 372 cubic yards of significantly petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted
soil was excavated from the former UST portion of the site Soil was excavated using an excavator
' . and stockpiled on and covered with plastic sheeting on site Soil samples were collected from the
base and each side wall of the excavation at a minimum interval of every 20 linear feet Soil samples
were collected from the base of the excavation at a minimum of one sample for every 400 square feet
' of excavation area Soil was also sampled from two soil stockpiles located at the site Figure 2
shows locations for soil sample recovery
' TPH-g was detected in the UST floor soil samples Floor S and Floor N at concentrations of 9 9
milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) and 4 2 mg/kg, respectively BTEX compounds were detected at
concentrations as high as 0 67 mg/kg(xylenes) TPH-g and BTEX compounds were not detected in
' any of the soil samples recovered from the walls of the former UST area
' MTBE was detected in Floor N and Floor S at concentrations of 2,300 and 15,000 microgram per
kilogram(µg/kg)by EPA 8260 Modified, respectively MTBE was detected in only one soil sample
recovered from the walls of the excavation area (South Wall) at a concentration of 0 012 µg/kg
' Stockpile soil samples contained TPH-g at concentrations as high as 420 mg/kg and BTEX
compounds were detected at concentrations as high as 30 mg/kg MTBE was detected in only one
' stockpile soil sample(SP1A-B) at a concentration of 250 gg/kg Table 2 presents analytical results
of the over excavation soil samples
•
Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc
I
