A Chain of Custody will be
completed for all samples collected and tracked to ensure sample integrity.
BTEX Ethers -
Detection Limits: 8020 8260 EDB 8260 8015m
Soil(µg/Kg) 3.0 5 50 20 1,000
2.2 Soil & Pore Water Sample Collection with the SimulProbe
When intervals are detected that are suitably coarse grained, attempts will be made to
collect pore water samples using the SimulProbe sampling tool.
The SimulProbe allows a pore water sample to be collected at the exact interval from which
a soil sample is collected thus providing correlative information on the sorbed portion of the
contaminated zone. Furthermore, the SimulProbe's design reduces the possibility of cross
contamination from shallower borehole waters.
After the SimulProbe groundwater sampling tool is advanced into the saturated zone, the
tool is retracted to expose the screen. The sample collection chamber is allowed to fill
under ambient hydrostatic pressure. Once full the chamber is sealed with a pneumatically
actuated (N2 gas) solenoid valve and the apparatus is brought to the surface. The sample
chamber is carefully emptied using a bottom-emptying device thus reducing the possibility
of sample agitation and volatilization. Once the sample container(40-m1 VOA) is filled and
capped, the bottle will be inverted, tapped, and checked for headspace bubbles. The sample
container is identified and labeled with a unique designation, inserted into foam holders and
placed in an ice chest cooled to 4°C for transport to the laboratory.
Once the borehole has extended below groundwater, pore water samples will be collected at
geologically significant units using the SimulProbe. It should be noted that collection of
pore water samples might not be successful in clay units.
2.2.1 Soil & Pore Water Sample Analysis
Up to five samples of soil-pore water from MW-201 will be submitted to CLS Laboratories
(State Certified Laboratory#1233). Samples will be analyzed for the following:
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) by EPA method 8020.
• Gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-Gas)by EPA method 5030/8015(m).
• Fuel oxygenate suite (MTBE, DIPE, ETBE, TAME & TBA) by EPA method 8260.
• 1,2-DCA, EDB, Methanol, & Ethanol by method 8260.
