May 9, 20136
' water sample at 31 - 33' bgs but dry, successfully attempt water sample at 38 - 40',
successfully attempt a soil sample at 44—46' bgs
The boreholes were abandoned by pouring cement grout through the rods as they were
withdrawn from the ground
2.2 Soil Sampling Procedure
Soil sample depths were targeted to complete a site conceptual model illustrating the lateral
and vertical extent of the soil plume at the site Test America utilized a piston type soil
sampler to obtain samples at depths designated by the field geologist The sampler contained
' three 6-inch stainless steel sleeves designed to hold the soil sample When assembled it was
attached to the end of the drill rods and then advanced to the targeted depth When the
targeted depth was achieved, the rods were retracted 18 inches to allow the cone to slide
' upward into the hollow core of the sampler The rods were then advanced downward (24
inches) to allow soil to fill the empty brass sleeves and then the drill rods were removed to
' bring the core sample to the surface
The Test America staff removed the sleeves from the sampler and presented them to the GTI
field geologist All soil samples were sealed with Teflon sheets, capped, labeled and placed
in a cooler at 4' Celsius for transport to the laboratory following Chain of Custody protocol
' 2.3 Soil Laboratory Analyses
The soil samples were submitted to California Laboratory Services of Rancho Cardova,
California (State Certified Laboratory#1233) for analysis of
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) by EPA method 8260B
' * Gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-G) by EPA method 8015M
• Oxygenated fuel compounds (5) by EPA method 8260B
' A summary of the CPT soil laboratory data is attached in Table 3, Appendix A, and the
laboratory data reports are attached in Appendix B
' 2.4 Groundwater Sampling Procedure
' The water sample depths were selected based on the depth to first groundwater, terminal
depth of the boreholes or for vertical definition between successful sample depths The
original intent was to advance the holes to a depth of 100 feet in each location but tight soils
precluded this objective The depths of refusal ranged from 68 - 89 feet bgs in the boreholes
Test America utilized a sacrificial '12" diameter PVC slotted well screen to obtain samples at
depths designated by the field geologist The screen was attached to the end of the drill rods
