17 January 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 02-0946
4.1. SOIL BORINGS
Four soil borings will be advanced at the site for soil sample collection and installation of ground
water monitoring wells. Soil borings will be advanced utilizing a truck-mounted drill rig equipped
with 8.25-inch hollow stem augers. The proposed borings will be advanced as follows:
• One soil boring to 45 feet in the former UST excavation area between UST 1 and UST 2 for
soil sample collection only; and
• Three soil borings to approximately 45 feet bsg for collection of soil samples and installation
of ground water monitoring wells.
4.2. SOIL SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The soil borings will be advanced using a truck-mounted drill rig. The soil borings will be sampled
at five-foot intervals from 5 feet bsg to the total depth of the boring. Relatively undisturbed soil
samples will be collected ahead of the drill bit using a California modified split-spoon sampler fitted
with 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long brass sleeves. Upon removal from the sampler, the sample
sleeves will be separated with a clean knife. The exposed ends of the second sleeve will be covered
with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Soils encountered in the borings will be visually
classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
Additionally, soil samples will be field-screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds
using an OVM.
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a DHS-certified
laboratory.
4.3. WELL INSTALLATION
Following completion of drilling and sampling of the soil borings,2-inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC
0.010-inch slotted well screen and casing will be installed into each of the borings. Based on the
depth of the boring and the ground water table, a 20-foot length of well screen will be installed. It
is anticipated that the well section will be placed across the observed water table with approximately
15 feet of screen section installed within the saturated interval and approximately 5-feet of screen
section extending above the water table.
Advanced GeoEnvironnientai, Inc.
