Manna Pro
Page 2
2. The vertical extent of soil, and groundwater contamination in the release area must be
defined. Once the vertical extent is determined, evaluation of the;horizontai extent
can be made. Your consultant indicated he had encountered heaving sands at a site
close to this site and was, concerned with encountering them at this site. Mud rotary
drilling and hollow stem`auger drilling with installation of a conductor casing were
discussed for use when drilling in heaving sands. The use of the"Simuiprobe"for
II' discrete sampling every;20 feet was also discussed.
3. Quarterly groundwater monitoring with collection and analysis of water samples must
be performed. Water samples should be analyzed for TPH as gasoline, TPH as diesel
and BTEX using P a proprGte EPA methods. They should also be analyzed for
oxygenates (MTBE, DIPS, ETBE, TBA, TAME) using EPA method 8260. MW3 is to
be added to the wells currently being sampled quarterly. MW4 is to be sampled at
least annually. Water samples from MW1 and MW3 are to be analyzed for 12. DCA.
4. Site conditions have changed since the submittal of the CAP in 1994. Two remedial
alternatives must be studied and the most cost effective remediation method
determined. Air sparginIg'with vapor extraction has been used successfully at other
'F sites in San Joaquin County and is considered a viable remedial alternative to be
studied at this site. Installation of vapor extraction and air sparge wells,-for
conducting tests of these'methods, at the same time as vertical delineation is
performed was recomrriended by PHSIEHD.
5. All corrective action proposals should be submitted to the California State Water
Resources Control Board Cleanup Fund for preapproval of corrective action costs.
Please submit a work plan, well permit application and $89 permit fee to PHSIEHD by August 30,
1999.
If you have any further questions_ regarding this matter, please contact Harlin Knoll at(209) 468-
3442.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
IYLX
Harlin Knoll, Senior REHS Margare aggro, 1E11S
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
c: RWQCB, Central Valley Region—Mark List
c: Geo-phase
C'.
