ERM-
West recommended that an investigation be done to determine the extent of
soil contamination prior to proceeding further with excavation of
contaminated soil. The purpose of the investigation was twofold: 1) to
determine "clean zones" within the current excavation where further
excavation was not necessary, and 2) to better define the extent of
contamination. The backhoe investigation was conducted on Thursday,
October 11, 1990. This investigation was done under the auspices of the
approved reexcavation workplan (7/24/90) and addendum (9/12/89) and
preliminary soil investigation workplan (10189). The findings of this
investigation are given in this letter report.
Investigation Methods
The investigation work consisted of digging slots into the sloped sidewalls of
the existing excavation at five locations. The approximate location of the
slots are identified on Figure 1. The slots were initiated by excavating a
trench approximately two feet below the floor of the existing excavation pit
at six locations. Five of the trenches were selected for sampling and further
excavation. The floor of the existing excavation was approximately fifteen.
feet below grade. A soil sample was collected by pounding a six-inch brass
tube into native soil at each of the five trench locations. Each sample was
collected near the toe of the slope of the excavation.
An affiliate of The Environmental Resources Management Group with offices worldwide
