...
MOR
HEa< - .
I
SECTION 2
METHODOLOGIES USED DURING
RECENT SOIL .AND GROUNDWATER
INVESTIGATION
This section outlines the methodologies used during the soil and
groundwater sampling that was performed by ERM-West during
November and December 1990. During this stage of the investigation,
25 soil borings, labeled MP-1 through MP-25, were installed and
sampled. Six of these borings were converted to 4-inch-diameter
monitoring wells. Three of these wells havn been sampled, and
additional groundwater samples were collected using a hydropunch.
The soil and groundwater sampling was performed in order to better
define the extent of contaminated soil remaining at the site anO
determine if groundwater had been impacted by the product in the
soil. The scope of work for this stage of the investigation consisted of
the installation of soil borings, soil sampling, sampling of stockpiled
soil, handling of drill cuttings, abandonment of boreholes,
groundwater level measurements, groundwater sample collection,
and sample analysis. The methodologies used during the completion
i of each of these tasks are presented separately below.
Soil Boring Installation
Twenty-five soil borings were i
nstalled around
theP erimeter of the
existing excavation as shown in Figure 1-2. All borings were
installed using truck-mounted drill rigs equipped with hollow stem
auger. The soils from the borings will be logged according to the
Unified Soil CIassification System (Appendix D). Drilling logs were
completed based on information obtained from drill cuttings, actual
illing characteristics. Locations of
soil samples, and changes in dr
utilities on the former tank site were identified prior to proceeding
with the soil investigation.
All borings were advanced to the depth of the first encountered
unconfined groundwater. In addition, groundwater samples were
collected from selected borings using a_hy_dropunc--h_
2-1
