10 March 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0456
3.0. ON-SITE CONTROL
William Little has been designated to coordinate access control and security on-site.A safe perimeter
has been established at 10 feet around borings. No unauthorized person should be within this
exclusion area.
4.0. HAZARD EVALUATION
The following substance(s) or hazards are known or suspected to be on site.
SUBSTANCES INVOLVE:D=- = CONCENTRATIONS: maximum
Waste oil petroleum-based products PCB 1242 -3.5 parts per million (mg/m3)
Chlorinated - compounds TCE - 0.2 ppm
PCE - 0.2 ppm
Gasoline and Diesel 250 ppm and 3,500 ppm
BTEX 10 ppm
The primary hazards of each are identified as follows:
1. Hydrocarbon fuels - Components of fuels are colorless liquids with strong aromatic
petroleum hydrocarbon-like odors. They are flammable and have low solubility in water.
Exposure to these materials in excess of recommended exposure limits can cause mild eye,
nose, and throat irritation and can produce a narcotic effect on the central nervous system.
Symptoms of exposure at these concentrations include headache, nausea, drowsiness,
dizziness, and loss of coordination. Certain components of gasoline (BTEX etc.) are known
or suspected carcinogens.
2. Chlorinated hydrocarbons - Components of waste oils are colorless liquids with low
aromatic petroleum odors. They are not flammable (boiling pressure 617-691 °F) and have
low solubility in water. Dermal exposure to these materials in excess of recommended
exposure limits can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation. Dermal exposure can cause damage
to the central nervous system. Symptoms of over exposure at these concentrations include
headache, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, and loss of coordination. Known carcinogens.
3. PCE and TCE (chlorinated solvents) - same as BTEX.
Advanced GeAnvironmental,lne.
