Box 2009
Stockton, California 95201
Subject ; Notification of Combined Air Sparge/ Vapor-Extraction Feasibility Test to be
Performed at ARCO Service Station No. 2130. 7906 North EI Dorado Street,
Stockton , California
Mr. Mendez:
RESNA Industries ( RESNA ) proposes to conduct a combined air sparge/vapor extraction
feasibility test (AS/ VET) at the subject site during the week of October 5 , 1992. At the
request of ARCO Products Company (.ARCO), RESNA is performing this work in
conjunction with an ongoing environmental investigation and anticipated treatment of
hydrocarbon-bearing soil and ground water beneath the subject site. Lead regulatory
oversight for the environmental programs being implemented at the site is being conducted
by Mr. Michael Wurna of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services.
n c -.n alternative to conventional groundwater pumping and aboveground treatment, ARCO
I
ras requeFted that RESNA evaluate the feasibility of utilizing air sparging technology to
refflo%ve dissolved gasoline hydrocarbons from ground water beneath the site . Air sparging
involves the inje :tion of air below the water surface to strip dissolved hydrocarbons from
the ground water to the vadose zone, Vapors transmitted to the vadose zone are captured
using soil vapor-extraction wells . A vapor extraction test will be performed to demonstrate
that vapor-extraction is capable of capturing air sparge off-gas that is transmitted to the
vadose zone.
The ASIVET will be performed to collect site specific data and evalunte the feasibility of
utilizing air sparging and vapor extraction technology as a hydi ocarbon-removal alternative.
The equipment to be used for the test will consist of ( 1 ) blower, (2) an internal combustion
( I C) engine, (3) instrumentation for measuring air flow , air velocity, air pressure, and air
temperature, (4 ) polyvinyl chloride piping , fittings, and wellhead connections , (5) a portable
organic vapor analyzer and air sampling, apparatus and ( 6 ) existing vapor-extraction wells
09L2aman '
30003.8
