SITE SAFETY AND HEALTH PLAN
This site safety and health plan (SSHP) addresses the potential health and safety hazards and the
procedures to be used during field operations. Project descriptions, including site information
and project objectives, are described previously in the Workplan.
Field Activities
The investigation activities planned for this site will include excavating five trenches and drilling,
installation, development and sampling of five groundwater monitoring wells to evaluate the
potential impact to soil and groundwater from raw tile material and reject tiles coated with a
mold-releasing agent. This agent is predominant composed of heavier end petroleum
hydrocarbons with up to 5% fatty acids. The raw tile material and the reject tiles were
transported from the MonierLifetile French Camp factory to Pellegri Farms, located at 21606
El Rancho Road, San Joaquin County, California (Site) (Figure 1). The trenches will be dug
no deeper than 4 feet.
In addition, there will be surface water samples collected from a nearby drainageway. One to
two Brown and Caldwell (BC) personnel may be on site at any given time in conjunction with
drilling and trenching personnel. All trenching and drilling will be conducted by California
licensed contractors. The contractor is responsible for providing the trenching competent
person, and maintaining compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) trenching permitting process. All subcontractors will work under the direct
supervision of the BC representative. Trenching and drilling locations will be chosen by BC.
The chemicals of concern are petroleum hydrocarbons.
KEY PERSONNEL
Ms. Linda Conlan will function as the project manager (PM). Ms. Wendy Linck will function as
project geologist (PG) and site safety officer (SSO). Ms. Anne Baptiste, Certified Industrial
Hygienist (C", is the corporate health and safety officer (CHSO). The project field staff have
completed 40 hours of comprehensive health and safety training which meets the requirements
of Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations Part 1910.120 (29 CFR 1910.120). The SSO has the
authority to monitor and correct health and safety problems as noticed on site.
The PM is responsible for generating, organizing, and compiling the SSHP, which describes all
planned field activities and potential hazards that may be encountered at the site. The PM is also
responsible for assuring that the project is performed in a manner consistent with the BC health
and safety program and that adequate training and safety briefing(s) for the project are provided
to the project team. The PM has provided a copy of this SSHP to each member of the project
field team and one copy to the subcontractor prior to field activities.
P:\20000\20587\SSHP R1.dm Page 1
