Box 1219 1
Lathrop, CA 95330
REQUEST FOR ADDENDUM TO GROUNDWATER MONITORING WORKPLAN, CALIFORNIA
NATURAL PRODUCTS, LATHROP, SANJOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the 6 June 2002 Additional Monitoring Well Installation Workplan, California Natural
Products, prepared by Kleinfelder, Inc. The plan was prepared in response to Waste Discharge
Requirements (WDRs) Provision 2.b that required preparation of a groundwater monitoring well
workplan. After reviewing the workplan,I have the following comments:
— As stated in Section 2.3 of the report, groundwater flow direction at the facility may be influenced by
groundwater extraction, irrigation water deliveries, and wastewater application. Because of the
importance of installing the new wells in areas that are upgradient of the land application areas,
additional evaluation is warranted. I have attached recent data collected at the Sharpe Army Depot
site for your consultant's use. Please submit groundwater elevation contour maps that better define
the groundwater flow conditions at the site. A minimum of four quarters should be contoured to
evaluate the groundwater flow direction.
— Based on the new information transmitted in this correspondence, please reevaluate the well
locations proposed on Plate 2 of the well installation workplan.
— If conditions in the borehole allow, it is recommended that the sand pack be surged prior to installing
the bentonite seal consistent with SJCEHD Well Standards Section 13.10.8.
— The workplan states groundwater samples will be analyzed in accordance with the current
Monitoring and Reporting Program requirements; collection of samples for trihalomethanes analysis
is also required on an annual basis in the first quarter.
— If a slip cap is used on the bottom of the well casing, it must be secured using stainless steel screws.
By 21 September 2002,please submit an addendum to the workplan that addresses these comments and
provides a schedule for well installation.
California Environmental Protection Agency
Co Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption.
For a list of simple ways you can reduce demand and cut your energy costs, see our Web-site at http://w .swrcb.ca.gov/mgcb5
