(AGE) on your behalf. In the September work plan addendum AGE proposes the
advancement of three soil probe borings to approximately five feet below surface grade
(bsg) to collect soil vapor samples; and advancement of three cone penetration testing
(CPT) borings to total depths of approximately seventy feet bsg and collection of grab
groundwater samples from adjacent twin borings for analysis for 1,2-dichloroethane
(1,2-DCA). By letter dated September 6, 2007, EHD had directed that a work plan be
submitted to address the 1,2-DCA groundwater plume, and that either a work plan to
assess the potential for vapor intrusion or a rational for discounting the potential threat
from vapor intrusion into buildings be submitted to EHD. On October 2, 2007, EHD
requested an addendum to the work plan dated September 20, 2007, to address leak
detection during soil gas collection. In the October work plan addendum, AGE addressed
leak detection by proposing to use seventy percent isopropyl alcohol as a leak detector
tracer compound when collecting soil vapor samples.
EHD approves the advancement of the three soil probe borings for collection of soil gas
samples in Tedlar bags. The three borings will be advanced onsite at locations indicated
in Figure 2 of the September work plan addendum. Approximately eight ounces of
isopropyl alcohol will be applied to a cotton towel used to wrap the base of the probe rod
at ground surface to test for ambient air leakage into the samples. Soil gas samples will
be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g); benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX); isopropyl alcohol and methyl tertiary
butyl ether(MTBE).
EHD also approves the advancement of the three proposed CPT borings: P-16 located
approximately thirty-five feet southwest of monitoring well MW-4; P-17 located
approximately thirty feet west/northwest of MW-5R; and P-18 located approximately
fifty-five feet south of MW-5R. Using soil lithological data generated during the
advancement of the three CPT borings, grab groundwater samples will be collected from
saturated permeable intervals at approximately seventy feet bsg from twinned borings
