(AGE) on your behalf. Analytical results for
groundwater samples collected from five monitoring wells on April 10, 2007, were
included in this report. The only compound detected was 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA)
found for the first time in groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-4
and MW-5R at 2.4 micrograms per liter(µg/L) and 3.8 µg/L, respectively. AGE sampled
these two wells again on April 20, 2007, as directed by EHD by letter dated May 7, 2007,
and confirmed that 1,2-DCA was present in MW-4 and MW-5R at 2.2 and 2.0 µg/L,
respectively. As a result, AGE recommended advancement of three soil borings located
southwest of MW-4 and MW-5R. EHD questions the proposed placement for these
borings. Although groundwater flow direction during the first quarter 2007 was reported
to be toward the southwest, historically groundwater flow direction has been variable
(predominantly southeast). Also, 1,2-DCA has been detected in the two deepest
monitoring wells (MW-4 and MW-5R) screened between approximately 60 and 70 feet
below ground surface (bgs) and located directly north of municipal well number 77
(MW-77); however, none of the proposed soil boring locations is between this municipal
well and MW-5R located approximately 250 feet north of MW-77. Submit a work plan
to EHD by October 26, 2007, to address the 1,2-DCA groundwater plume and provide
technical justification for all proposed work.
By letter dated May 7, 2007, EHD directed you to evaluate the potential for vapor
intrusion into buildings either by submitting a work plan by July 25, 2007, or by
providing rationale, with technical support, for discounting vapor intrusion into buildings
as a potential hazard for this site. To date, EHD has not received a response to this
directive. In Quarterly Report — Second Quarter 2007, AGE recommended the
advancement of three soil borings for collection of soil gas samples. Submit either a
work plan to assess the potential for vapor intrusion or rational for discounting the
potential threat from vapor intrusion into buildings to EHD by October 25, 2007.
