Each sample will be
collected in a 2-inch by 6-inch clean brass sleeve. Immediately after obtaining the soil sample, it
will be field screened with a PID (photo-ionizing detector) containing a 10.2 ev bulb, for the
presence of volatile organic compounds, gasoline ranges. The sample sleeve will then be sealed
with teflon sheets and plastic end caps to prevent the loss of VOC's (volatile organic compounds).
The plastic end caps will be sealed to the brass sleeve with duct tape and the sleeve labeled with
site ID, sample ID, date and time sampled, name of sampler, and laboratory analysis needed. Once
labeled, the sample will be placed into a ziplock baggy, sealed and placed into an ice chest
containing ice to keep the sample cool until delivery to the analytical laboratory.
A Chain of Custody (CofC) will be completed documenting the site ID, sample ID's, date and time
samples were obtained, the laboratory analysis needed, and the name of the sampler. The CofC
will follow the samples and document when and who took possession of the samples from
collection through final analysis by California Certified Laboratory, North State Environmental
ELAP Certificate No. 1753.
SAMPLE ANALYSIS
The three UST's contained unleaded gasoline. San Joaquin County Health and the State of
California require that the soil samples be analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHg) using EPA methods 8015 or 8260, for Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes using
EPA methods 8020 or 8260 and the fuel oxygenants (MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE and TAME) using
EPA methods 8260.
NOTIFICATIONS
Underground Service Alert (USA), the City of Stockton Fire Department and San Joaquin County
Health will be notified 48 hours in advance of any excavating and/or drilling at the site.
FIELD SCREENING OF SOILS EXCAVATED AND EXCAVATIONS
Upon removal of the product dispensing piping the native soils will be field screened using a photo-
ionizing detector (PID) with a 10.2 ev bulb. This detector is sensitive to volatile organic
compounds that have an electron potential of or less than 10.2 e.v. Gasoline vapors are readily
detected with this detector and it is the preferred field-screening instrument for soils at suspected
gasoline-contaminated sites.
2 R-603 piping upgrade 1-2000
