C. The pipe inspector should take precautions for his/her
personal safety and protection against flying debris and also
• against the whipping action of the pipe which can be the
result of the sudden release of stored energy. Goggles should be worn
to protect against flying debris.
D. Avoid personal contact with the piping system while it is
pressurized during testing, except for the actual checking of
A*\ the joints for leaks. Absolutely no one should be in the trench
with the pipe while it is being initially pressurized for leak testing.
E. ' not straddle the
pipe during
• testing.
F. Do not stand at the end of the piping system, where it
changes directions, while the pipe is being checked for
leaks. CAUTION: FAILURE TO STRICTLY FOLLOW THESE
A
INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
G. Smith Fiberglass Products recommends that after the piping system
has passed the 50 psig pressure test, the contractor should reduce the
product line pressure to a pressure of not more than 25 psig and
maintain this pressure until all paving is completed. Leave the pressure
gauge on each line for inspection. The contractor should check the
gauge daily to verify that the pipe is holding pressure.
XII. In some cases
greater depths may be required by the authority having jurisdiction or by
local codes.
The maximum allowable burial depth is 23 feet for burial in moderately
compacted soils which do not contain clay and where the soil modulus is at
least 1000 psi.
Minimum burial depths shown in the above burial table are acceptable if, and
only if, the ditch width is 2.5 feet or less; the paved surfaces exten'Id at least2
feet on either side of the ditch; the fill material is clean sand or%:' to 3/." pea
gravel; and 6" of the fill material is placed under the pipe as bedding
material.
Remaining backfill above sand or pea gravel amounts as shown in the last
column of burial table can be native soil if desired.
Multiple lines in the same ditch should be separated by one pipe diameter or
6", whichever is greater, unless special precautions are taken to insure that
backfill material is placed underand around the pipe. With these conditions,
the lines may be as close as 4". In all cases, there must never be voids (areas
which do not contain backfill) under or around the pipe.
If burial conditions other than those discussed above exist, contact Smith
Fiberglass Products Inc.
e Smith Fiberglass Products Inc., 1984
t?
``®
' tX'0 ltCC; ilaboraror47s
LISTED
NONMETALLIC UNDERGROUND PIPING
FOR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS ONLY
PRINTED IN U.S.A.
7.5 M-1 -89
