PROCEDURES FOR SOIL SAMPLES
DESCRIPTION AND IDENTIFICATION
1. Description and indentification of soil samples was conducted using ASTM
Designation D 2456-64 •Standard Practice for Description and Idantificaiion of
Soils(Visual-Manual Procedure). This procedure was strictly followed in oder to
give as complete a description as possible, but it must be stressed that this is a
visual-manual procedure
MOISTURE CONTENT
2. To determine the moisture content of the sample as preserved, the sample is
weighed this weight is recorded as 'w', and then dried to a constant weight using
a heat source and weighed again, this weight recorded as 's'. The molslure
content, W, is calculated m-w-s/s100(from ASTM D 2216-60).
GRAVEL, SAND, AND FINE FRACTIONS
3. 200-400 grams of the died sample is sieved using a No. 4 sieve, the portion
passed is weighed and recorded as sand and fines. The portion retained on the
No. 4 sieve is weighed and recorded as gravel. To calculate the percentage of
gravel the w6>jht of the gravel is divided by the weight of the original sample and
multiplied by 100. The portion passing the No. 4 sieve is th(yn wet sieved using
the No. 230 sieve and dried io a constant weight. The pgbanlage of sand is
then calculated by dividing the portion retained on the No.'230 by the original
sample and multiplying by 100. The percentage of fines-is calculated by
` J subtracting the total weight of gravel and sand subtracting that weight from the
original sample weight, dividing by the original sample weight, and multiplying by
100.
Sample calculation:
3ilOg sample: weight retained on No. 4 sieve, gravel: 2%
weight retained on No. 230 sieve, sari. 125g
{ weight passing No. 230 sieve, gravel* sand- 300 = fines
we~ght of fines: 150g }
percentage gravel: 25/300"100= 8.3%
percentage card 125/3000100= 41.79
percentage fine& 1501300'100- 50.09E
SIEVE ANALYSIS:
4. Sieve analysis was performed as suggesled by ASTM Designation; D 422-6
"Standard Method for Particle-Size Analysis of Soils". WEGE method modified
-` the ASTM standard by using the following sieves
21/2' No. 7
i 112' No. 35
518•-- -- Na. $0 -
5/166 No.120
No. 4 No. 230
These sieves were chosen to closely follow the Wentworth scale for grain size
classiHcallon
