- BC&D Properties
Report, MW Installation and Monitoring
Project No. 8.1.2
December 17, 1992
Page 8
r
5.8 Groundwater Sampling Procedure
The wells were purged and sampled by GeoAnalytical personnel. Their
sampling protocol reportedly is as follows:
The sampling technician unlocks the well and measures the depth to water.
Then, using a Teflon bailer, the technician purges stagnant water from the well
casing and the well is allowed to recharge. The well is sampled using a Teflon
bailer. The bailer is lowered into the well and carefully allowed to fill with
LN water. The bailer is raised from the well taking precaution not to agitate the
contained water. An emptying device is coupled to the bailer and the water is
slowly transferred into the sample container (40 ml VOA vials). The vial is
capped, inverted, and tapped to check for any air bubbles that may be contained
within the sample vial. After assuring that no air bubbles are contained in the
sample, the vial is labeled and inserted into a closed cell foam holder and placed
.. in an ice chest at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory. Before sampling the
next well, the Teflon bailer is decontaminated with Liquonox detergent and
deionized water and a bailer blank is collected to assure bailer cleanliness and to
- protect against cross contamination.
To monitor possible cross contamination by the lab, a trip blank prepared from
distilled deionized water by the lab is carried throughout the sampling, storage,
and shipping process.
`' A chain of custody document is then filled out listing all samples collected. This
document is used to track the samples and to ensure their integrity.
5.9 Cross Contamination Prevention
All sample equipment (split spoon sampler, and brass tubes) and auger (drilling
rod, drilling bits, & auger) were thoroughly steam cleaned before being used and
between uses. Plastic gloves were worn while collecting and changed between all
L. samples.
5.10 Chain of Custody
Chain of Custody (CofQ forms are legal documents used to track the handling of
+. samples All dates, times, and persons are listed from the time the sample is
