Table 7. Result of Nitrate Loading Calculation
Variable Value Units Description
Long-term average concentration of percolating
Nc 5.65 mg/L-N effluent
The US EPA recommended MCL for nitrate in drinking water is 10 mg/L-N. In a worst-
case situation, the maximum buildup of nitrates from the use of septic systems in the
aquifer is predicted to be 5.65 mg/L-N. The result of the nitrate loading estimate is
below the maximum drinking water standard.
Special Events Scenario
Although no special events are planned for the winery at this time, Mr. Gash indicated
that in the future he may wish to host events. He stated that a maximum of four to five
special events could be held per year; attendance at each event could include up to 20
people.
A second nitrate loading estimate was prepared to address the additional waste water
flow from these potential special events. In this situation, the maximu ildup of
nitrates from the use of septic systems in the aquifer is predicted to be(j.66 N.
Details of the additional calculation are presented in Appendix 6.
Discussion of Nitrate Loading Results
Total Nitrate Impact
Based on the method and assumptions described, the result of the nitrate loading
estimate indicates that the existing and potential future residences and proposed
development on the Site should not cause a buildup of nitrates in the aquifer above 10
mg/L-N. Because of the satisfactory result, no mitigation measures are warranted. ( "2
LOGE 1301 Page 13
