i
` ll
(72.)For the open and shade corrals, the manure solids are scraped up during the spring, summer
and fall and placed on the Manure Storage Pad to await transport. Manure is loaded on the
spreader trucks from this area. At this time, samples can be taken for manure nutrient analysis.
Ralph Hayes and Sons retain all records regarding, date and volume of manure transported, and the
specific location of the manure deposited at the final destination to be land incorporated.
Approximately one-fourth of the cows are located in freestalls during the rainy winter months, so
manure accumulation in the loafing corrals can be managed easier.
It can be reasonably concluded that the surface and subsurface soils contain adequate clay content
to comply with the California Code of Regulations, as noted in the soil texture analysis results in
Table 2. Although the Manure Storage Pad is not technically a"retention pond,"this area
obviously stores manure and is therefore under the jurisdiction of the California Code of
Regulations, Section 22562 (d), Subchapter 2, Article 1, Title 27: "Retention Pond Design -
Retention ponds shall be lined with, or underlain by, soils which contain at least 10 percent clay
and not more than 10 percent gravel or artificial materials of equivalent impermeability."
One of the most critical items for the EHD concerning manure management, is the issue of fly
control. Within San Joaquin County, flies can be the most significant environmental and
complaint-driven issue regarding dairies. Mr. Rocha is keeping informed on the most recent
developments for dairy fly control. Fly baits, sometimes referred to as scatter baits, have been
used by Mr. Rocha and other dairyman for many years as part of an integrated pest management
(IPM)program. When the fly populations are high during the spring and summer months, these
baits are used to supplement the primary fly control method of sanitation and manure
management. For the Rocha Dairy, sanitation includes freestall flushing and corral scraping,
while manure management includes accelerating drying time by spreading and turning of manure
on the Manure Storage Pad and transporting the solids when feasible.
4
Until recently, all available fly baits registered for use in California had similar properties since
they contained the insecticide Methomyl and the pheromone attractant Muscalure. Recent studies
by University of California researchers have found that housefly resistance to Methomyl can be
very high in large fly populations found on facilities such as dairies. Since Methomyl baits no
longer have the insecticidal properties it once had in the 1990s, two new housefly insecticides are
now available in California, and may be used on the Rocha Dairy.
The first product is called "QuickStrike" and is produced by Starbar. It is a fly bait strip that is
placed in strategic locations, such as around corrals, etc. It contains Nithiazine, which kills the flies
quickly after ingestion of the bait. The second product is a granular bait call "QuickBayt" made by
Bayer Animal Health. This material contains Imidacloprid, which is the same material used to
control fleas on dogs. QuickBayt will be placed in bait stations near where flies congregate on the
Rocha Dairy. Both of these products contain the fly pheromone Muscalure as feeding attractants.
9
Chesney Consufting
