4
MEMORANDUM
From: Rolph A. Davis, Ph.D
L Executive Chairman
LGL Limited
To: Sangeeta Lewis. P.E.
President,Lewis Engineering
Kevin Basso and Erin Fanning
Forward Landfill,Inc.
Date: 26 October 2014
Re: Other Bird Species at Forward Landfill
During surveys of gulls at the Forward Landfill in the period from fall of 2010 to spring of 2013,
other species of birds have been recorded. However, these other species do not occur in any
,., greater frequency around the landfill property than in other areas of San Joaquin County.
There are four species of raptors that occur in the area: Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk,
. Swainson's Hawk, and American Kestrel. Each of these species occupies large home ranges of
which the landfill is only a small, non-essential part. The species do not feed at the landfill and
would still occur in the same areas even if the landfill was not present.
L
The landfill sometimes attracts small numbers of European Starlings and Brown-headed
Cowbirds. These birds may attempt to feed at the waste disposal area, but the numbers remain
low because they are deterred by the falcons used in the gull control program. The numbers of
starlings and cowbirds at the landfill are similar to those that occur in agricultural areas
., throughout San Joaquin County.
The closed, vegetated parts of the landfill attract the same species in the same numbers as in the
agricultural areas in the surrounding farming areas and even on the airport property itself. It is
concluded that the landfill itself is not attracting other bird species that could pose a hazard to the
safety of aircraft using the airport.
