■ oak-woodland zone,
■ cottonwood-willow zone, and
■ creekside zone.
Site Preparation
Before planting woody vegetation, a cover-crop seed mix will be applied to all planting areas
to rovide erosion control and mininuze the potential f6r weed growth. The cover crop will be applied
P
using broadcast seeding methods. The suggested mix will include.application of a nitrogen-based
fertilizer (16-20-0) applied at a recommended rate of 500 pounds per acre and using the following
seed composition:
Common Name Scientific Name 'c i n R tea Minimum PLS }
Blue wildrye Elymus glaucus 10 72%
Creeping wildrye Leymus triticoides 3 72%
Hordeum brachyantherum ssp. b. 10 72%
Meadow barley 80%
Slender wheatgrass Agropyron trachycaulum S
Zorro fescue Vulpia myuros 5 85%
California golden poppy Eschscholzia californica 2 74% 1
Arroyo lupine Lupinus succulentus 74%
Total
40
'The recommended application rate is in pounds per acre.
bPLS = pure live seed = percent germination multiplied by percent purity.
After the cover-crop seeding operations have been completed, a mulch of cut straw will be
applied to the planting areas at a recommended rate of 3,000 pounds per acre. The straw mulch
applied to the channelbanks will be crimped into the soil to assist in.minimizing potential weed
growth.
Plant Materials
Woody plant materials will be collected from healthy parent stock within an approximate 10-
mile radius of the project site and propagated by a qualified native-plant nursery. The proposed
palette of plant materials is shown in Table 3-1. Plants will be installed as cuttings or small-sized
container stock(Dee-Pots or equivalent) and will be protected from herbivory by being placed in plant
protection tubes or cages. Plant protection devices will be double-staked and designed to withstand
potential floodflows within the proposed floodplain. An earthen watering basin approximately 4 by
30 inches will be created around each plant. A 4-foot-diameter area around each plant will be kept
weed-free throughout the first 1-3 years by using herbicides appropriate for application within and
adjacent to waterways.
Weiland Mirigarion and Monitoring Plan for rhe Chapter 3.
