1 <br /> i <br /> Field Soil Sampling Procedures (SJ County) <br /> Soil Samples: <br /> Materials Needed: Shovel, Bucket, Zip Lock Bags or A&L Laboratories standard <br /> 1-lb. Sample bags, Soils Map of the area, Felt Tip Marker, Chain of Custody <br /> F41' Forms, Ice Chest with Ice or"blue ice". <br /> Procedure: <br /> 1. In the office, use soils map to plan where samples are to be taken. <br /> Bring this map with you. <br /> 2. Prepare a cooler or ice chest chilled to 4° Celsius and containing ice or <br /> "blue ice" coolant. <br /> 3. Using field map, indentify locations from which samples will be taken. <br /> Take at least one sample from each different type of soil as shown on <br /> the soils map. <br /> 4. With a shovel, excavate a hole, Stop digging and measure hole from <br /> time to time and take samples as you reach the depths specified below, <br /> 5. First Sample: 1 ft. to 2 ft. deep. Use a tape measure to measure the <br /> r depth of the hole. When it's 1 foot deep. When it's 1 foot.deep, <br /> remove loose soil from the bottom of the hole. Dig another shovel full <br /> and put about 1 pound of this dirt in a zip lock bag. If using A&L <br /> t Laboratories standard 1 lb. sample bag, fill to the line on the bag. A <br /> minimum of 50 grams is required for the S2N test. Label the bag <br /> according to labeling procedures (Below). Put bag into cooler. t <br /> 6. Second Sample: 3 ft. to 4 ft. deep. With a shovel, excavate the hole <br /> 36" deep. Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the hole. When <br /> it's 3 feet deep, remove loose soil from the bottom of the hole. Dig <br /> another shovel full and put about 1 pound of this dirt in a different <br /> sample bag from sample one. If using A&L Laboratories standard 1 <br /> lb. sample bag, fill to the line on the bag. A minimum of 50 grams is <br /> required for the S2N test. Label the bag according to labeling <br /> ` procedures (Below). Put bag into cooler. <br /> 7. .Third Sample: 5 ft. to 6 ft. deep. With a shovel, continue to excavate <br /> fill <br /> the hole 60" deep. Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the <br /> hole. When it's 5 feet deep, remove loose soil from the bottom of the <br /> hole. Dig another shovel full and put about 1 pound of this dirt in a a <br /> different sample bag from sample one and two. If using A&L <br /> Laboratories standard 1 lb. sample bag, fill to the line on the bag. A <br /> minimum of 50 grams is required for the S2N test.
