Quality Control Board (RWQCB) design standards (see the RWQCB's "Fact Sheets",
Appendix E)
e. The soil sampling and permeability testing program will be designed to be representative of
all soils lining all proposed pond areas..
f. Construction of the lagoons will be inspected by a qualified professional to ensure that
geologic heterogeneities (e.g., channel deposits and sandy lenses) are identified and properly
mitigated to ensure integrity of the-liner in compliance with the RWQCB standards. The liner
will be protected against damage during operation and maintenance activities.
l _
g. Site drainage is included in the project design and construction of any manured area (dairy
surroundings, corrals, and ramps, etc.) pursuant to Title 3, Division 2, Chapter 9, Article 22,
§646.9 of the California Code of Regulations to ensure that ponding does not occur.
h. Regular maintenance of corrals and dry manure storage areas will include filling of
j depressions. Dairy personnel will be taught to correctly use manure collection equipment.
J. The potential for discharge of water-borne pathogens to existing and proposed domestic water
supply wells will be minimized by ensuring that the domestic wells are constructed in
accordance with the California Well Standards and that appropriate minimum setbacks (100
feet ) between wells and potential sources of pollution are maintained.
F►
Lagoon capacity calculations and effluent, parlor water charts, rainfall, evaporation, and the
Fbalance chart calculations used to determine the required pond volumes are presented in
l Appendix F.
Available Waterholding Capacity
The amount of water a soil can hold, and that is available for plant use, is determined by the soil's
F
physical properties. Soil texture and depth are the most influential factors in determining the
Available Waterholding Capacity (AWC) of a soil. Many soils have varying textures at different
depths. Table 1 (Appendix C) gives the general range of AWC .per foot of depth for several soil
Ftextures.
Considering a crop with a 60-inch effective root, the values of inches of water per inch of soil were.
rl obtained from the soil survey tables.
Fi
F See Page 47 for References and Bibliography
©Westem Dairy Design Associates,Inc.2003
r Page 34
