less the estimated nitrogen release (ENR) from previous years' lagoon water and/or commercial
fertilizer applications.
Nitrogen available from ENR varies with soil temperature and moisture content, so each field's soil
samples will be analyzed immediately before each planting to accurately account for residual
nitrogen available for the up coming crop.
In the evaluation of salinity (see Appendix C), which requires data on concentration variation over
time, a statistical methodology for determining trends will be selected. The first trend analysis will
be conducted after five years of data collection, and then each year thereafter. Buildup of salt in
the soil is detrimental to growing crops. Consequently, the farmer will have a natural incentive to
take remedial action upon'receiving a report that a salt buildup has occurred.
To provide base data for future comparison and determine amounts of dry and liquid manure to be
added to the soil to provide a balance of elements for optimal plant growth and nutrient uptake,
water and soil samples will be taken at those locations shown on the attached soil / water
sampling location maps (Appendices B and D).
Details regarding soil, surface water, and groundwater sampling procedures, type of analyses,
location, and frequency are presented in the "Soil Suitability Study" Report.
Record Keeping
The owner and/or operators will maintain records for a 5-year period that document the
implementation and management of the manure (liquid and solid).
F
Documentation will include:
Annual manure tests for nutrient contents for each manure storage containment.
Current soil test results.
Application records for each manure or commercial fertilizer application event, including:
FContainment source ortype and form of commercial fertilizer.
FField(s) where manure or organic by-products are applied.
Amount applied per acre.
Time and date of application.
FWeather conditions during nutrient application.
General soil moisture condition at time of application (i.e., saturated, wet, moist, dry).
F See Page 47 for References and Bibliography
©Western Dairy Design Associates,Inc.2003
Page 42
F4
t
