3
1
Field Nutrient Water/ Irrigation Procedures
F • With the phase I improvement at the Ed Nunes Dairy, the four freestall barns, hospital parlor,
and milking parlor will undergo 10 wash cycles per day in winter, and 5 in summer, using well
water. .
F! • In phase II, the six freestall barns, hospital parlor, and milking parlor will undergo 14 wash
cycles per day in winter, and 7 in summer.
• In phase ill, the eight freestall barns, hospital parlor, and milking parlor will undergo 18 wash
Fcycles per day in winter, and 9 in summer.
• In phase IV, the ten freestall barns, hospital parlor, and milking parlor will undergo 20 wash
cycles per day in winter, and 10 in summer.
The water will flush the manure from the dairy cows down the lanes and will be routed through the
flush return line to one of the new settling ponds. There will be two settling ponds: one remains in
I! . service while manure is being removed from the other. For phase 1, a settling pond next to the
flush lagoon will be extended to 1050 feet long. This settling pond will be used along with, the
existing settling pond. For phase II, the existing settling pond will be removed from service, and a
second new 850 foot long settling pond will be built. These ponds are adequately sized for all four
phases. See Settling Pond Manure Removal Management, below, for a more detailed explanation
of settling pond operation.
F
Due to the slow flow through the settling pond, the majority (80%) of the manure solids separate
Ffrom the water, and float.atop the pond. Water exits the settling pond and is directed to the flush
lagoon, where the majority of remaining solids settle out of the water. These solids will settle out
of the retention pond where they will decompose. Periodically, approximately every 10 years the
"sludge" remaining will be pumped from the bottom, dried and properly disposed of off site.
The lagoon has an irrigation pump, which pumps via a 12" diameter pipe to one or more of eight .
fields. The existing lagoon will be extended to a length of 1300.feet. This lagoon will be
adequately sized for all four phases new freestall barns (barns #3 through #10) plus the existing
freestall barns and new milking parlor. This expanded lagoon will include a new floating lagoon
flush/irrigation pump. The floating design allows water intake near the surface even with varying
water levels, avoiding the pickup of sludge solids that exists with a fixed pump inlet.
Cropping field number-one, as numbered on the Site Approval application, Assessor's Parcel No.
203-190-03, is located on the east side of Murphy Road. Nutrient water blended with clear water
from the irrigation well flows from east to west across the field_ When nutrient water irrigation is
managed properly, the.flow is regulated so that all the water is absorbed by the soil, and a minimal
amount reaches the lower end of the field. In the event that there is excessive flow, a drainage
ditch along the west and north edges of the field will return any water which is not absorbed by the
F See Page 47 for References and Bibliography
©Western Dairy Design Associates,Inc.2003
Page 44
F
[ .
