k
INFORMATION SHEET Ik
ORDER NO.
KNIFE RIVER CORPORATION DBA KRC AGGREGATES
AGGREGATE MINE AND WASTEWATER SYSTEM
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Knife River Corporation dba KRC Aggregates owns and operates the KRC aggregate processing,
q Y•
facility and mine areas at 24717 Brandt Road, Clements, San Joaquin Count KRC processes earth
materials excavated in the 1,048 acre property. The facility was constructed in the 1986; KRC has
owned the facility in the 1950's. The mine is expected to operate until approximately year 12016. KRC
does not presently operate a concrete plant or an asphalt plant; a concrete plant was operated at the
facility in the past.
KRC expects to produce approximately 0.9 miilion tons of aggregate per year. Most of thel',water used
in aggregate washing is recycled but due to evaporation and percolation, make up water(fresh water)
is needed. The wastewater is discharged to settling ponds. No flocculants are-added to thel wastewater.
Groundwater is reported to occur approximately 200 to 300 feet below the ground surface. ;However, I
based on the presence of groundwater springs in the area groundwater, at least seasonally, exists at
depths less than 200 to 300 feet depths. Groundwater is not encountered.in the excavations'. The
wastewater ponds are located at or slightly below grade. No groundwater monitoring wells-exist on
the property,.one industrial process supply well exists at the aggregate processing equipment. This r
Order does not require groundwater monitoring because chemicals are not added to the wastewater and
because of the low likelihood of the discharge impacting groundwater quality. This Order does require
monitoring of flow rate, wastewater pond freeboard, and wastewater pond capacity. In addition, the . I
Discharger shall submit updated site maps identifying the location of wastewater ponds and'updated
water balances to evaluate the wastewater ponds' capacities.
Domestic wastewater is discharged to a septic tank permitted by the San_Joaquin County.
Environmental Health Department. The surrounding land uses are primarily agricultural.
1
TRO: 4/13/2001
it
C:Tmjmt FiWSilaVKRC AgUcSAa1nfo.dm
