CABE ROAD
TRACY, CALIFORNIA
Dear Mr. Carnahan:
f
As requested, we present this letter in response to the review comments issued by San Joaquin
County Environmental Health Department (SJCEHD) dated August 23, 2004. The comments
were prepared following the review of our soil suitability and nitrate loading studies dated May
14, 2004.
Based on information provided by SJCEHD, we understand that high nitrate levels have been
detected in groundwater sampled from some wells in the project vicinity. As a result of these
high nitrate levels, there are at least four sewage disposal systems in the project area that were
engineered with the intent of reducing the nitrate loading.
Septic systems used at adjacent properties and in the general area coupled with the shallow
groundwater discussed in our report likely contribute to the high nitrate levels detected in
groundwater drawn from nearby wells.
SJCEHD does not agree with the estimated numbers of employees used in the nitrate loading
calculations in our previous report. As specified in their review comments, the following revised
calculation is based on 13 permanent employees using 15 gal/day, 6 part-time employees using 5
gal/day, and 5 customers using 5 gal/day for a total of 250 gal/day. As in our original report, we
have used the Hantzsche mass balance equation (source: Predicting Groundwater Nitrate-
Nitrogen Impacts, Hantzsche and Finnemore (1992)), which is presented below with an
explanation for each factor and the value used in our study. The selection of parameters was
based on previous studies and investigations performed by our firm and others, San Joaquin
County Sewage Standards, communication with Mr. Mike Huggins with SJCEHD, and
38058.GOIIST04L442 September 20,2004
©2004 Kleinfelder,Inc.
