1
REEVE TRUCKING
Page No. 10
NITRATE LOADING CALCULATIONS
r.
3 Simplified Prediction of Ground Water Nitrate Buildup From Effluent Disposal:
Assumptions
1. Nitrate-N concentration of effluent stream based on estimate of 40.0 mg/i.
Assumption based on work from Hantzsche and Finnemore, 1991 (see footnote no.4).
2. Fraction of nitrate-N loss due to denitrification in the soil is assumed to be 25%.
Assumption based on values from Hantzsche and Finnemore, 1991 (see footnote no.4).
3. Assume 3.5 in/yr deep percolation of rainfall. Reported average rainfall is 14.0 in/yr based on
Soil Conservation Service data for San Joaquin County (see footnote no. 3). Assume 8.5 in/yr
loss due evapotranspiration. Assume 2 in/yr loss due to run off.
r Calculation: (14 in/yr)-(8.5 in/yr)-(2 in/yr) =3.5 in/yr.
? :
4. Due to lack of tests, conservatively assume average nitrate-N concentration of rainfall is 0.17
mg/I. Nitrate-NO3 for rain is 0.5 to 1.0 mg/1. So use 0.75 mg/l Nitrate-NO3. Convert to nitrate-N.
(0.75 mg/l Nitrate-NO3 )/4.43 =0.17 mg/1 nitrate-N. Conversion:(Nitrate NO3/4.43=Nitrate-N).
a Assumption for concentration of rain based on values used by Hantzsche and Finnemore, 1991
F (see footnote no.4).
r
F
- pERSo
a N
W
a Q
P
4S5or%
r .s
