FILE COPY
PUBLIC HALTH SERVIS
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISIONi " V! ,
i Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer`
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
209/468-3420
P
PAULINE MARQUAND DEC 0 6 2000
C/O SHAWN KELLEY M & M BUILDERS SUPPLY11
P O BOX 1107
TRACY CA 95378-1107
RE: M & M Builders Supply f SITE CODE: 1530
8111 W. Eleventh Street
Tracy CA 95376
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)
has reviewed the "Addendum to M&M Builders Work Plan; Rationale for Groundwater
Definition" dated November 10, 2000 that was submitted by Wright Environmental
Services, Inc. on behalf of the above referenced site and has the following comments.
.V
PHS/EHD requested submittal in writing of a description 6f how vertical definition of the
petroleum hydrocarbon contaminant plume in groundwater would be made at this site.
This request was made as a condition to the approval of the October 16, 2000 work plan
titled "Proposal for Additional Site Groundwater Investigation, and Groundwater >
Monitoring Well Installation". The Addendum states that"Borings will be advanced to
the working aquitard contact so that the aquifer thickness is known". It was previously
stated in the October 16, 2000 work plan that the borings would be advanced to depths
of about 20-25 feet. Prior work at this site included the advancement of five soil borings.
Two of the borings, B-1 and B-2, were advanced to 26 feet below surface grade (bsg);
the remaining three were advanced to 20 feet bsg. The boring log for B-1 labeled the 26
foot sample as clayey silt with 20% sand. The boring log for B-2 labeled the 26 foot
sample as sandy silt to sandy clay. PHS/EHD is unclear whether this is the depth or
lithologic contact that the Addendum is referring to as thel'working aquitard contact', or if
the Addendum is proposing to extend the borings to a greater depth. Reference is made
in the September 12, 2000 "Proposal for Additional Site Assessment Investigation" to a I
well log for the onsite domestic well, stating that it shows that this well has a sanitary I
seal that crosses clay strata. Is this clay stratum the 'working aquitard contact' that the
Addendum is referring to? And if so, what is its depth? Please clarify in writing to
PHS/EHD what the intended depth of the proposed soil borings is.
i f`
Review of the file for 8181 W. Eleventh Street, the location of the domestic well used by
M & M Builders, indicates that there may actually be two domestic wells at this location. !
This needs to be verified, and if there are two wells, both should be tested. Total depth
and use of these wells should also be ascertained. Any information that M & M Builders
or Wright Environmental has concerning the onsite wells, including well logs, that could
aid in the investigation of this site should be forwarded to PHS/EHD for review. I
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
