III. NITRATE LOADING STUDY FINDINGS
A. WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS AND FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS
WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS
Because there will be a kitchen adjoining the Temple/Prayer Hall, there may be additional organic
loading. However, this organic loading should be low since the foods prepared are not greasy or
oily. All food wastes must be handled as a solid waste to reduce organic loading. Additionally,
there will be very little dishwashing since all utensils will be disposable. Of a higher consequence,
is that a percentage of the wastewater flows will be wash water. This graywater will be from the
washing of feet and will have low nitrogen concentrations. The wash area is denoted on the
Architectural Plans as"Feet Wash Area."
C3 Therefore, the two graywater sources of kitchen flows and feet washing flows in all likelihood will
cancel each other out with respect to organic loading. Blackwater will originate from toilets and
will be a smaller volume than the kitchen and feet wash wastewater flow volumes. Additional
wastewater constituents may consist of other liquids to the system, such as juices, etc. No industrial
or commercial chemicals, solvents, etc. should be introduced into the septic treatment system.
The scientific literature (Ref. 9) cites nitrogen concentrations in septic effluent typically ranging
from 17 mg N/L for basins, sinks, etc. to 140 mg N/L for toilet wastes. Therefore, considering a
70/30 percent usage for toilet blackwater nitroge5cp1trations and feet wash/kitchen graywater
nitrogen concentration, respectively, a valu of 1L of is effluent will be used to
calculate nitrate-nitrogen loading for this pr of 62 mg is typically used for
residential calculations, as indicated in the scientific liter e , Pg.149).
This value of 103 mg/L is extremely conservative given that domestic household blackwater wastes
(toilet), graywater wastes(showers, laundry, tooth brushing), and kitchen wastes (food, cooking
oils, dishwashing) would be expected to be a much higher(an estimate being three to four times
higher) nitrogen concentration than what is projected from the Hindu Cultural Center.
WASTEWATER FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS
To determine nitrate-nitrogen loading from any project, wastewater flow volumes must be
determined as accurately as possible. Loading projections are normally based on the maximum
anticipated wastewater flows. The numbers of on-site Parishioners has been defined by Mr. Iyer for
the project and has been specified in the Use Permit Application for a Use Permit.
The San Joaquin County Onsite Wastewater Disposal Standards assigns 10 gallons per seat(person)
when there is a kitchen in a House of Worship. Therefore, considering the total n ed le
on a weekly basis, we have: 81 people x 10 gals/person x 1 d/week on Saturday = 810 gals
Total wastewater flow per week= 810 gals/wk
Total wastewater flow per year= 810 gals/wk x 52 weeks/yr—42,120 gals/yr
8
