ASTEWATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - OPERATIONAL CRITERIA
SSS§3.7. Discussions on the efficient operation of the effluent disposal method, disposal field
longevity, and environmental protection are based upon the environmental parameters discussed
within this report. An example of the wastewater management system to be constructed is as
follows, and is based upon discussions with EHD personnel and EHD Sewage Standards.
A. SEPTIC TANK
Septic tanks store the accumulated sludge, scum and effluent(clear zone)volumes, which in turn
affect treatment of Total Nitrogen (TN) within the tank. Total Nitrogen is the summation of
ammonia-nitrogen(NH4) and organic nitrogen(proteins, amino acids, enzymes). Since the septic
tank is predominately anaerobic, nitrogen cannot exist in its oxidized state as nitrate Within the septic
tank for any length of time. Nitrate is quickly reduced to NO or NOZ. If nitrate existed in the tank
effluent, this would also be added to ammonium and organic nitrogen to arrive at Total Nitrogen. SSS
The following calculation illustrates that a 1,200 grease trap and a 2,000 gallon septic tank will allow
sufficient hydraulic residence time (HRT) of influent within the tanks. This tank capacity wil
promote nitrogen decomposition due to sufficient HRT. Additionally, a septic uent filt r
must be installed on the outlet tee of the tank, as noted on the septic system plans, ng
nitrogen to the disposal field.
Detention Time Example:
Detention Time= 1.200 gal crease trap+2.000 gal septic tank capacity x 0.70(300%volume lost to sludge/scum accumulation)
4(Weekly Peaking factor)x 810 gals/day(Highest ADF every Saturday)
Detention Time= 1.0 days. The minimum acceptable detention time is 1.0 day. Therefore, 3200 gallon total
tank capacity is suitable for sufficient detention time.
B. LEACHLINE REQUIREMENT CALCULATION BASED ON SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY SEWAGE STANDARDS FOR COMMERCIAL SEPTIC SYSTEMS:
Base Tank Capacity= 1,200 gal. Since the greatest anticipated daily flow will occur every
Saturday at 810 gpd, the disposal system must be adequate to manage this anticipated maximum
flows as if this were the Average Daily Flow(ADF), every day.
10
